As we all know, today is Mother’s Day.  A day filled with flowers and cards, family outings and brunches, smiles and hugs.  The internet is filled with touching stories of a mother’s love, expressions of gratitude, and notes of appreciation.  But here, I offer a different sort of Mother’s Day tribute; not a post lauding mothers, but a personal Mother’s Day note of gratitude to all those people who help make my role of “Mom” so gratifying and fulfilling…

To the grandparents, who love my children with exuberance, calmness, and wisdom.

To my sons’ teachers, who, with their patience and knowledge, help their little minds grow.

To the parents whose parenting skills I admire, for providing inspiration and motivation.

To the parents whose parenting techniques are different than my own, for teaching me that there is more than one “right” way of doing things.

To my sons’ friends, for helping to give them a happy childhood that is filled with giggles and mischief.

To my first mom friends who I met following the birth of my first son, whose candid and uncensored admissions, advice, and support brought me out of the post-baby haze and have continued to sustain me.

To all of my pre-mom friends who “knew me when,” for growing with me as I moved into the role of mom and for reminding me of the importance of not losing myself in the process.

To my own mom, for instilling in me the immeasurable value attached with the role of mom; and to my husband’s mother, for doing the same for him.

And to my husband, for making my job more enjoyable on the good days, more tolerable on the bad days, and teaching our children the importance of respectful, committed love.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms, and thank you to all those people who make my job so freaking fantastic.

  1. Eh Hem… What about great auntie’s and uncles who love your children as their own and who always have open arms, ears and hearts for their many nieces and nephews? (I couldn’t resist, no hurt feelings) Have a great day today….all mom’s deserve it!
