In honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday today, I thought I’d share a few of my favorites lines from his poems and books. There is still so much for us adults to learn from his “children’s” books.
Congratulations!
Today is your day.
You’re off to Great Places!
You’re off and away!
You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself any direction you choose.
You’re on your own. And you know what you know.
And YOU are the guy who’ll decide where to go.
— Oh, the Places You’ll Go
The Waiting Place…for people just waiting.
Waiting for a train to go
or a bus to come, or a plane to go
or the mail to come, or the rain to go
or the phone to ring, or the snow to snow
or waiting around for a Yes or No
or waiting for their hair to grow.
Everyone is just waiting.
Waiting for the fish to bite
or waiting for wind to fly a kite
or waiting around for Friday night
or waiting, perhaps, for their Uncle Jake
or a pot to boil, or a Better Break
or a string of pearls, or a pair of pants
or a wig with curls, or Another Chance.
Everyone is just waiting.
— Oh, The Places You’ll Go
Today you are You,
that is truer than true.
There is no one alive
who is Youer than You.
—Happy Birthday to You!
Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot,
Nothing is going to get better. It’s not.
—The Lorax
A person’s a person, no matter how small.

I love Dr. Seuss so much. I loved him as a child too. I loved the fact that he didn’t care about making sense and broke the rules about using “real” words. I love that his books were always about being in the moment. I love that he talked about green eggs and ham and arms build up. I love that his trees were pink and his sky could be yellow or maybe just normal green and blue. You never knew.
I love “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” and have given the book as a gift many times. The quote you chose is one of my most favorite. I also love the book “Fox in Socks,” and read it to my girls often. We’re big Dr. Seuss fans in our house! Great post!
