There is a restless impatience in the air, a twitchy and fidgety unsettledness as if the cosmic soul knows that is about to undergo a massive transformation. The Earth is raiding grandma’s antique jewelry box and bedazzling itself in fiery rubies, rich garnets, golden citrines, serene emeralds, and intricate jades. Climatic melodrama brings crisp, chilly nights and bright, sunny days, gusty winds and shocking stillness.
Autumn is, perhaps, the most classically understated of the seasons, a cool mask of style to hide its complex and brooding alter ego. As with most things autumn, it seems like less is more so here is a simple list of 10 words to describe autumn.
- Fleeting
- Nostalgic
- Indecisive
- Anticipatory
- Sophisticated
- Poignant
- Passionate
- Soporific
- Cozy
- Wistful
How would you describe autumn?

Lovely sentiment. I always feel Autumn has a delightful ‘urgency.’ (that’s my word) Get out there – finish tasks, start new stuff, do NOT waste a day inside. In my case – shoot. There is a whole winter to photoshop the images that have been waiting and besides, there is a butterscotch feeling to the transitory light of fall that is a once a year treat. Thanks.
Christie, you are so prolific. I realize I missed a half dozen of your latest posts. I’ll go back and read a few of them now. Autumn – I love what you said about raiding your grandmother’s jewelry box – nice analogy. I will go with nostalgic as I greet the chilly air I am lamenting the loss of warm nights, and of course my niece who visits me each summer.
What a beautiful post. All of the above, but for me I crave cozy the most.
I love your list! I wish fall weren’t so fleeting. I’m not a huge fan of winter 😉
